PELICAN: LP Info, Release Show, Coffee Blend, Scion Rock Fest Participation

PELICAN’s Southern Lord Recordings debut full-length What We All Come To Need - originally released in October - will be issued in double-LP format on February 23rd. The deluxe vinyl version bears a beautiful heavyweight gatefold jacket, and the fourth side of the release contains three bonus tracks not available on the CD version.

In celebration of the vinyl release of the album PELICAN will play a hometown show in Chicago on March 12th alongside Pinebender and Follows (ex-Russian Circles). This record release show will also be the sole location to purchase PELICAN’s Ephemeral Bean Blend; the band’s own limited edition collaboration with Intelligentsia Coffee of Chicago. The band states: “The richest, most complex flavors take patience and skill to craft and are over far too quickly. In that spirit we are proud to present this blend of coffee beans, who have known artisan care from their moment of inception at the farms at which they were grown to the roastery where their delicate nuances were honed to perfection by the skilled craftsmen at Intelligentsia. Enjoy the moment while it lasts.”

PELICAN will also take part in the recently-announced Scion Rock Fest in Columbus, Ohio on March 13th. The free event features more than 20 bands including Shrinebuilder, Yob, Absu, D.R.I., Cannibal Corpse, Voivod, Trap Them and more. See the full lineup here: http://www.scion.com/rock.

Check out the band’s recently released video for their song “Final Breath”, which is the first PELICAN song to ever feature vocals: http://tinyurl.com/y9b8l96.

sunn 0)))’s “Hunting and Gathering” dubbed “HEAVIEST SONG EVER”

…I GUESS there is no is accounting for taste! Absolute maniacal mad man Jason Ellis decided that the song: “Hunting and Gathering” by sunn 0))) (from the Monoliths and Dimensions) album was the heaviest song ever! I did a very comical interview on his show: http://www.radiofaction.com/
I even took calls from listeners!

here is the visual aggression.
Cry now, cry later…

Virulence-”If This Isn’t A Dream 1985-1989″ NEW SOUTHERN LORD RELEASE!

OUT NOW FROM SOUTHERN LORD!

Southern California hardcore punk band Virulence was originally formed in 1985 by Scott Hill, Ken Pucci, Mark Abshire and Ruben Romano. They were heavily influenced by the heaviness of the Melvins, as well as the intense aggression of Black Flag and Bl’ast! After the band’s demise in 1990, the members reformed under the moniker of FU MANCHU. This anthology contains all known recordings by Virulence. Besides the long lost classic album “If This Isn’t a Dream”, this CD contains early demos and vicious live recordings. All remastered and available on compact disc for the very first time. Extensive booklet with photos, flyers and liner notes from the band members. A very worthy induction into the chapter of early heavy music recordings.

Southern Lord: Best Record Label of the Decade in Chunklet!

Thanks to the smart asses (!!!) over at Chunklet….they have given us some very heavy props. Thanks guys! Also thanks to Billy at Shake It Records!

Record Label Of The Decade: Southern Lord. Even though plenty of their roster just ain’t my bag. I’m speaking from an operational POV. (love me some Boris, Earth, *Sunn & Weedeater tho!) Starting in late ’98-99, the folks there consistently release the best polyvinyl product one could lay eyes on. And they do so with great care, attention to detail, and all for a very, very, reasonable price. They “get it”. From Greg, Stephen, Eddie and the whole crew – these people W-O-R-K their asses off. An indie label grew & grew for an entire decade, all while producing very non-commercial music. There’s the proof for your pudding right there. Hydra Head can blow me. (It’s a limited edition of only 29 copies, in 14 different colors, pre-order now! Even though they’re “all gone”. Riiiiiight.) But you’ll get a download card for 56 Coalesce B-sides!
*The closing song on SUNN’s “Monoliths & Dimensions” entitled “Alice” was the most astonishing piece of music I heard in 2009.
