BXI’s First Official Performance To Commence Alongside ALTAR Next Week!

As BORIS wrap up their latest month-long North American tour with two California shows this week, they’re also prepare to join forces with several allies for their upcoming live work with ALTAR and BXI performances scheduled in New York.

First up, ALTAR (comprised of SUNN 0))) and BORIS as one group) will perform at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival in Monticello, New York alongside Sleep, Iggy & The Stooges, Sonic Youth and countless more in a massive outdoor space. Two days later ALTAR will make another appearance, this time alongside the first official performance of BXI (BORIS and Ian Astbury of The Cult), which will all go down at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple, which has been inarguably dubbed “the loudest room in NYC,” and presented by All Tomorrow’s Parties and The Blackened Music Series.

The debut release from BXI is a 4-song self-titled EP, which was released by Southern Lord Recordings on August 17th. The EP is quickly surprising fans of both The Cult and BORIS, as well as journalists across the globe, and has listeners taking this new collaboration quite seriously, making this official first concert together an exceptionally special performance for the unit.

PELICAN: 10-Year Anniversary Box Set, Exclusive Shows And Beer Confirmed

Chicago’s reigning gods of heavy instrumental rock, PELICAN, have announced plans to play two very special shows in celebration of their 10-year anniversary box set release, out October 19th on Berlin, Germany’s Viva Hate Records. The elegantly packaged wooden-box set will be limited to a run of 500 copies and will encompass material from their four full-length releases and three EPs.

Formed in Chicago in 2000, the quartet’s discography has stood as a consistent refutation of genre and musical classicism, perfecting an obtuse approach that has become increasingly precise and calculated while no less recognizable. Listeners from all corners of the earth have celebrated PELICAN’s unique instrumental take on metal, watching them spur the genre into new conceptual territory.

PELICAN will play Chicago’s Bottom Lounge on October 23rd joined by longtime friends and occasional collaborators The Life & Times. Munster, Indiana’s Three Floyds Brewery — recognized internationally as one of the most unique and distinguished micro-breweries in the country — will celebrate the event by unveiling a special, PELICAN-dedicated Doppelbock (one of the few styles of beer all four band members regularly agree upon). The as-yet-unnamed ale will be served at the Chicago show and at select watering holes and specialty shops around the Chicagoland area for a limited time. One week after the Chicago appearance, PELICAN will join forces with legendary doom-metal overlords Goatsnake on October 30th to play the Troubador in Los Angeles, an event likely to be one of the most anticipated So-Cal metal sets in recent memory.

PELICAN 10-Year Anniversary Dates:
10/23/2010 The Bottom Lounge - Chicago, IL
10/30/2010 The Troubador - Los Angeles, CA

sunn 0))) to curate Roadburn 2011!

Roadburn festival is thrilled to unveil the curator for the 2011 edition of Roadburn: Sunn O))). The band, to be specific Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley, has agreed to curate our festival on Friday, April 15th, 2011 and host a special event.

As curator, Sunn O))) will personally select the bands that will play during their special event as well as perform a headline show. Sunn O))) will be Roadburn’s fourth curator, following David Tibet in 2008, Neurosis in 2009 and Triptykon’s Tom Gabriel Warrior at this year’s festival.

Right now, Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley are gearing up for two major Sunn O))) events in September: performing Altar with Boris at ATP New York and Brooklyn’s Masonic Temple, but you can expect to hear from them in the future with respect to their thoughts on the 2011 Roadburn festival and Sunn O)))’s performance.

We are overjoyed to join forces with Sunn O))) for the upcoming Roadburn festival. Their metal-based drone experimentations have proved groundbreaking and hugely influential for an entire new generation of musicians practicing the art of avant-garde metal, drone, post rock and psychedelica. Sunn O))) is also widely acclaimed for their eclectic collaborations with everyone from musicians Attila Csihar, Masami Akita (Merzbow), Boris, Steven Stapleton, Justin Broadrick, Oren Ambarchi, Ulver, Joe Preston, John Wiese, and Julian Cope to filmmaker Jim Jarmusch and visual artist Banks Violette.

Greg Anderson, who is also Goatsnake’s songsmith and the entrepreneur behind Southern Lord Records, and Stephen O’Malley, a prolific improviser and composer who is well-known for being involved in Burning Witch, KHANATE, KTL and DACM/Gisèle Vienne theatre-works, have performed in different guises during various Roadburn festivals over the years, which is exactly why we felt they would be the ideal curators. Both of them consistently push the envelope musically, and one of our steadfast goals has been to make Roadburn a festival that explores the cutting edge while celebrating the familiar, too. With that in mind, we could think of no better spiritual guide for 2011 than Sunn O))).

We are truly looking forward to the new ideas and visions that the crossover drone duo will bring to the festival next year. When asked to sum up Roadburn in one word, “progressive” would be a fitting choice. Evolving and improving are part of this. The festival is a tribute to the open mindedness of its bands, curators and audience. The joy comes from expanding musical horizons, and with Sunn O))) acting as our curator we’ll definitely be in for some artistic surprises.

Roadburn Festival 2011, including Sunn O)))’s special event, will run for three days from Thursday, April 14 to Saturday, April 16 at the 013 venue and Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland. There will be an additional afterburner event on Sunday, April 17, 2011.

Nails signs to Southern Lord!

Southern Lord Signs NAILS; Reissue And New Album In Motion

Continuing to supply the masses with aural brutality of all types, Southern Lord Recordings are proud to add Southern Californian trio NAILS to their ever-expanding roster.

NAILS’ music is beyond brutality; filthy, vicious and raw. Imagine a cross between the good Amrep bands of the nineties (Helmet, Hammerhead, Today is The Day, Unsane) and Cro-Mags Age of Quarrel riffage played at breakneck speeds. Their epic battle cry Unsilent Death was recorded during the cold winter of 2009 at Kurt Ballou’s (Converge, Trap Them, Disfear, Black Breath) Godcity Recording Studio. The CD version of Unsilent Death was originally released in very limited quantities by Six Feet Under records. The LP version was self released by the band on the band’s own Streetcleaner label and quickly sold through the 1000 piece pressing. Southern Lord is extremely honored to pick up the torch of this album and let it burn brightly through many more countless battles!

Unsilent Death Track Listing:
1. Conform
2. Scum Will Rise
3. Your God
4. Suffering Soul
5. Unsilent Death
6. Traitor
7. I Will Not Follow
8. No Servant
9. Scapegoat
10. Depths

With plans already in place to record a new release for Southern Lord in early 2011, the NAILS crew will spend the rest of this year on the road. As previously announced, the band will take part in the Southern Lord-sponsored The Power Of The Riff Festival in Los Angeles on August 8th alongside Goatsnake, Black Breath, From Ashes Rise, Repulsion, the Animosity-era lineup of Corrosion of Conformity and countless more. In early September they embark on a cross-country rampage that will last over a month, including five dates opening for Venomous Concept.

Weedeater: 3rd Times A Charm Tour!

WEEDEATER Announce 3rd Time’s A Charm Tour; Recording Of New Album Nears

Sludge bastards WEEDEATER have announced several new headlining shows throughout the Midwest and Southeastern US this September. Kicking things off in their home state, the band will devastate the crowd at Raleigh, North Carolina’s Hopscotch Festival on September 11th, also with Public Enemy, Tortoise, Kylesa, U.S. Christmas, Harvey Milk and tons more. WEEDEATER will be dropping plenty of new material from the upcoming album on these shows, which will lead directly up to the recording of Jason…the Dragon with Steve Albini, finally.

WEEDEATER have been pushed to their limits over the past twelve months. While it’s been a year of heavy and successful touring for the band, it was also a year of catastrophic physical injury to this seemingly invincible trio. Leading off with Dixie Dave Collins’ shotgun accident which spawned the brutal “Nine Toe Tour” earlier this year, and continuing shortly after that with drummer Keko tearing his meniscus after returning from said tour and requiring surgery. Both of those accidents prevented the group’s two previously scheduled meetings with Albini. The group’s latest installment of injury includes guitarist Shep breaking his pinkie finger while on tour in Europe this July alongside Black Cobra and Saviours. Luckily, Shep can still riff with his cast so the European tour and the recording session were spared.

These accidents have forced the band to push the recording for their now hard-earned upcoming full-length back several times now. Initially scheduled to take place in January of this year, then again in April, the trio will now step into Albini’s Electrical Audio Studio this September 15-19 to hammer out their mammoth 4th full-length Jason… The Dragon, their 2nd release for Southern Lord Recordings.

WEEDEATER 3rd Time’s A Charm Tour:
9/11/2010 Hopscotch Music Fest - Raleigh, NC w/ Public Enemy, Kylesa, U.S. Christmas [tickets]
9/12/2010 The Hideaway - Johnson City, TN
9/13/2010 Southgate House - Newport, KY [tickets]
9/20/2010 High Noon Saloon - Madison, WI [tickets]
9/21/2010 Reggie’s Rock Club - Chicago, IL [tickets]
9/22/2010 FuBar - St. Louis, MO
9/23/2010 The Muse - Nashville, TN w/ Black Tusk

Check out the tour poster, killer new live footage of WEEDEATER at Hellfest this summer, raging with their cover of ‘Skynyrd’s “Gimme Back My Bullets” and more at this location: http://www.earsplitcompound.com/site/?p=1026.

Stay tuned for more shows still being scheduled around the band’s recording schedule in September, as well as more updates on the upcoming album.
